These two entries can be combined into one: Brickbat Herald
  1. This heraldic title was registered to Society for Creative Anachronism at some point and transferred to Marta as-tu Mika-Mysliwy in June of 2007 (via Laurel).
  2. This heraldic title was registered to Society for Creative Anachronism in December of 1991 (via Laurel).

The May 2006 LoAR has:

Vatavia, Barony of. Badge. Per bend sinister Or and azure, a harp and a dragonfly inverted counterchanged.

Per precedent (q.v. George Anne, 05/2002), a dragonfly inverted is one step from period practice. This badge is for local bards.

The forms also have the note about this being a badge for local bards. Can this note get added to the OandA? entry for this badge?

Got it...

Under: http://oanda.sca.org/oanda_desc.cgi?p=PALE%3avert%3aplain%20line%3acharged%3a1 is:
  1. Michael von Fulda

    * The following device associated with this name was registered in May of 2007 (via Atlantia):
Azure, on a pale argent between two lightning bolts palewise Or a gauntlet clenched sable.

This isn't a pale vert; it needs to be moved to be with the other pales argent. :-)

This one has no features on any of the descriptions. The pale has no tincture specified, so it matches any tincture. There are items with incomplete or inadequate indexing. This one shouldn't have been one.

Under: http://oanda.sca.org/oanda_desc.cgi?p=BIRD%3aazure%3aclose%20to%20dexter%3a1 is:
  1. Anthony fitz Robert

    * The following device associated with this name was registered in September of 1991 (via the West):
Per fess Or and vert, on a pale counterchanged, between in chief two martlets, in base a martlet vert.

The marlets are vert; this needs to be moved. :-)

...and they were not marked with any tincture, so they would show up under any tincture, including vert.

The OandA? index has Hippocampus - see Monster - Sea - Horse but it should really be cross-referenced to Fish - Seahorse.

...it shoudl go both places, as Hippocampus is ambiguous

There's something wonky going on here:
  1. James Blackhawk

    * This name was registered in February of 1985 (via An Tir).
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in July of 1983 (via An Tir):
Per bend argent and sable, two falcon's heads erased counterchanged.
    * This name, registered in July of 1983 (via An Tir), was changed to James the Blackhawk in September of 1983 (via An Tir).

...and it was changed back to James Blackhawk in February of 1985. Yeah, it's weird, but, well, it's weird.

This shows up under TORCH, but there's no torch in it -- a flamberge is a wavy-bladed sword:

  1. Hrothgar Rogan
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in November of 1991 (via the East):
Per bend sinister engrailed argent and gules, a flamberge and a lion rampant counterchanged.

Fixed -- Herveus

This shows up under BEND:argent:plain line:charged:1, but as far as I can tell, the bend is Or.

  1. Fearghus mac Domhnaill
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in July of 2006 (via Atlantia):
Azure, on a bend Or between two bears rampant argent three sheaves of arrows palewise sable.

Fixed -- Herveus

JML (12/30/08): The O&A shows:
  1. Egil Nöckl the Redhand

    * The following device associated with this name was registered in August of 2006 (via Atlantia):
Or, a goat rampant between in fess two roundels gules.
    * The following device associated with this name was registered at some point and reblazoned in August of 2006 (via Atlantia):
Or, a goat rampant between two roundels gules.
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in February of 1991 (via Atlantia):
Or, a goat rampant between two roundels gules.
The middle bullet should go away - this was a reblazon of the Feb. 1991 registration, and as far as I can tell there is no difference in the blazons that would require errata to correct.

Fixed -- Herveus

Doing a search for my own name gets all my registrations, plus:

  1. Aryanhwy merch Catmael
    * An unknown record (type=`W') was found in the database.

Is this my heraldic will?

Yes. W indicates an heraldic will as called out on an LoAR.

Catteden, Canton of The following device associated with this name was registered in July of 2005 (via the Middle): Argent, a demi-cat sable issuant from a base azure, in dexter chief a laurel wreath vert.

This seems to be indexed under CAT:azure:1, not CAT:sable:1

oops. Fixed -- Herveus

Theo the Pilose (reg. 1/1976), Argent, a bicorporate dragon, tails in chief, azure, bellied vert, armed and langued gules.

is listed under Monster - Dragon - 1. Precedent indicates that a bi- or tri-corporate create is considered to count as two or three, not one:

"Emer ingen Meic Aedain. Name and badge. Argent, three foxes courant in annulo conjoined at the feet gules. This badge is returned for conflict with Richard Blackbury's device, Argent, a tricorporate fox gules, marked proper. [Vulpes vulpes]. A tricorporate fox has three bodies with a single head. We typically do not grant a CD for conjoined versus not conjoined, therefore there is only a single CD for the postures of the foxes (courant versus erect). [LoAR 09/2006]"

So shouldn't Theo's be under Monster - Dragon - 2?

Yep...moved - Herveus

  1. Custance nic Raibert Macconnachie
     * The following badge associated with this name was registered in December of 1990 (via Ansteorra):
(Fieldless) A lily-of-the-valley [Muset de Bois] slipped and leaved proper.
? same person as Custance nic Ralbert Macconnachie
  1. Custance nic Ralbert Macconnachie
     * This name was registered in October of 1987 (via Ansteorra).
The following device associated with this name was registered in October of 1987 (via Ansteorra):
Purpure, on a pale Or three frets conjoined gules, all within a bordure Or.

These are the same person. The LoAR of October 1987 lists the Raibert spelling, not the Ralbert typo; error in the database, not on the LoAR.

Fixed -- Herveus

Godfrey of Inwood's device was registered in the April 1991 LoAR as Vert, a bat-winged mantyger sejant guardant within a bordure sable, which is what appears in Oanda. However, there is an errata note in June 1991 which states "The tincture of the mantyger and bordure are argent, not sable as stated in the LoAR." which requires an update in Oanda. Nicholas of Estleche

Herveus: fixed

JML 10/23/2009: The O&A has:

  1. Sylwein Tarianlas Ysginydd

    * This name was registered in October of 1998 (via Drachenwald).
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in February of 2007 (via Drachenwald):
Argent, a triskelion of arms in armor brandishing swords vert, a bordure engrailed purpure.
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in March of 1999 (via Drachenwald):
Argent, a trisklion of arms in armor brandishing swords vert, a bordure engrailed purpure.
      ? blazon typo for "triskelion"
    * The following badge associated with this name was registered at some point and corrected blazon in February of 2007 (via Drachenwald):
Argent, a trisklion of arms in armor brandishing swords vert, a bordure engrailed purpure.

The last bullet can go away, it was the March 1999 device that was being reblazoned - this was clearly indicated in the errata letter and there don't appear to be any blazon differences to cause a mismatch. The sole reason for the reblazon was to fix the spelling of trisklion.

Herveus: fixed

JML 10/23/2009: For some reason the following is coded as having a lozenge; it doesn't. Even if passion nails are considered to be lozenges (and I don't think they are) there's more than one.

Oskar den Frivillige Ungkarlen

    * The following device associated with this name was registered in June of 1989 (via Meridies):
Gules, a claw hammer argent, handled Or, within an orle of passion nails argent, a chief per fess azure and argent.
      Armory descriptions:

JML 10/23/2009: This has two lozenges, not one.

Aktay of Grey Niche

    * The following device associated with this name was registered in November of 2008 (via Gleann Abhann):
Gules, on a chalice between in fess two lozenges Or, an Arabic pen box fesswise sable.

EdC? 02 Feb 2010: Items appearing in errata letters (in the LoAR) should be backdated to the LoAR they affect, right?

Morsulus: errata actions normally get the date of the errata letter. You can go to that month and find the action in either the LoAR or the Errata letter. Backdating the entry in the database makes that impossible.

Tibor of Rock Valley

    * The following device associated with this name was registered in August of 1987 (via the East) and changed/released in February of 1996 (via the East):
Or, on a bend azure between two open books tergiant gules, three bezants, all within a bordure sable.

EAST

Tibor of Rock Valley. Device change. Vert, a delf Or. It was missed that this was a device change. His previously registered device, Or, on a bend azure between two open books tergiant gules, three bezants, all within a bordure sable, is released.

EdC? 30 Mar 2010: Looks like a wrong category for this entry:

Eileen Dover of Calafia

The following device associated with this name was registered in December of 2001 (via Caid):
Vert, two badgers combattant argent marked sable, in chief a roundel and a point pointed checky sable and argent.

I found this under "BASE:plain line" whereas all other points pointed seem to be under "BASE:complex line".

This entry from the 12/2008 LoAR (Atenveldt) doesn't appear to be in the OandA?:

Sara Blackthorne. Name change from Sara Rebecka Chadburn (see RETURNS for device).

Her previous name, Sara Rebecka Chadburn, is retained as an alternate name.

Morsulus: fixed

Lachlan of Cromarty

The following device associated with this name was registered in April of 2008 (via Caid):
Per bend wavy Or and azure, a bend wavy counterchanged.

This is found with the plain line bends, not complex line bends as it should be.

Morsulus: fixed

The following all appear in BEND:multicolor:plain line:uncharged:1 --

  1. Mieszko of Aire Faucon

    * The following device associated with this name was registered in November of 2000 (via Atlantia):
Azure, a bend vair palewise between two spear points Or.

  1. Astrith of Swansvale

    * The following device associated with this name was registered in July of 1982 (via the West):
Per bend Or and vert, a bend vairy of one trait bendwise sinister Or and vert, in sinister chief a borage flower azure, slipped and leaved vert.

  1. Eglentyne Merryweather

    * The following device associated with this name was registered in August of 1998 (via An Tir):
      Vert, a bend vair.

These bends are all fur, not multicolored (IOW BEND:fur:plain line:uncharged:1)

Morsulus: Vair (and vairy), being evenly divided of two tinctures, get tagged as either "vair" or "multicolor neutral". "fur" I reserve for unnamed ermine variants. Nothing to fix here...

The following is in SUN:sable:1:uncharged, but I don't see any suns or sun-like elements in it:

  1. Jan Starszy
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in April of 2003 (via the East):
Per chevron argent and gules, a ship sails unfurled sable and two crosses formy in pale argent.

Herveus: fixed

These are both in PILE:complex line:uncharged:1, but they are in fact charged:

Calontir, Kingdom of The following badge associated with this name was registered in October of 1982 (via the Middle): Sable, on a pile embattled between two spears in pile argent a cross of Calatrava purpure. for the Fyrd of Calontir

Žorbjorn inn sterki The following device associated with this name was registered in February of 2003 (via An Tir): Sable, on a pile raguly throughout argent between two goats statant regardant addorsed Or a pile raguly sable. Full form: {Th}orbj{o,}rn inn sterki

Herveus: Calontir fixed; Žorbjorn is fine. Note that Žorbjorn has a pile on the pile; look at the descriptions and you will see a primary charged pile and a tertiary uncharged pile.

Given the 10/2002 correction, the 04/2003 entry is not a mis-spelling.

  1. Margaret Hepburn of Ardrossan

    * The following badge associated with this name was registered in August of 2003 (via the Outlands):
(Fieldless) A marguerite proper charged on the seeds with the Roman capital letters M and H conjoined azure.
a marguerite proper appears to be Or

"A daisy proper is argent, seeded Or" per the 05/2007 LoAR. JML: Margaret's marguerite is argent, seeded Or.

Herveus: noted and corrected

Forgotten Sea, Barony of, has two badges with poplar trees. At least one of these trees are classified under "tree - rounded shape". Poplar trees are, apparently, elongated. Reblazons will be appearing in the 07-09 LoAR, but this one needs to be re-classified.

Herveus: ... but the reblazon ditched the word "poplar", so things are all copacetic.

  1. Bianca of Dismal Fogs
    * This appeared in March of 1987 (via the West).
It appears to have been a mis-spelling of Bianca of the Dismal Fogs.

The error actually occured on the March 1988 LoAR, not the March 1987 LoAR.

Herveus: corrected ---

  1. Seumus MacAonghuis? MhicDhubhshith?

    * This appeared in June of 1993 (via Ansteorra).
It appears to have been a mis-spelling of Seumas MacAonghuis? MhicDhubhshith?.

This error was corrected on the July 2006 errata letter, but since that correction didn't get in to the OandA?, it was corrected again on the 09 2007 errata letter.

Herveus: it's in there now...

It appears that a description containing a count of "4" fails to be found to be compatible with "2 or more". On the face of it, that should not happen. This means digging carefully into the fully-fleshed out compatibility matrix.

The specific case, found by Teceangl, is Havoise de Rohan, who fails to appear in the category "Lozenge - 2 or more". If you change the search to "LOZENGE:4" or "LOZENGE:3 or more", she shows up. Weird.

Herveus:

I think I've fixed this on oanda.sca.org.

The OandA? has:

MĀns Knutsson

    * This name was registered in March of 2000 (via Drachenwald).

His name was actually registered with a lower-case a-ring in the given name, not an upper case a-circumflex:

Måns Knutsson. Name and device. Per pale sable and argent all goutty counterchanged, a sickle gules .

Herveus: fixed

Sine ni Mhoraig appears in the database as a device with no name registration. The LoAR lists the entry as a device (and there are "name and device" items nearby). The scanned paperwork indicates "name - OK", so I think this was an inadvertent omission from the LoAR.

Herveus: corrected

This entry from the 07/2003 LoAR Paul O'Flaherty. Name and device. Azure, three triangles conjoined, one and two, Or. does not appear in the category TRIANGLE so far as I can tell.

  1. Padrig Saethydd
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in April of 2006 (via the East):
Quarterly sable and azure, a sun Or and in chief three increscents argent.

Herveus: corrected

It looks like Shire of Marcaster and Barony of Marcaster need to get connected up with each other in the database:

  1. Marcaster, Barony of

    * The following badge associated with this name was registered at some point and associated with order name in November of 2006 (via Trimaris):
Azure, issuant from the battlements of a demi-tower a banner Or, a tierce wavy paly wavy argent and azure.

This appears in both BIRD:stooping to dexter:1 and BIRD:stooping to sinister:1 --

Barre FitzRobert? of York

    * The following badge associated with this name was registered in April of 1996 (via the Outlands):
(Fieldless) On a sun Or a horned owl perched atop a spear azure.

But shouldn't it be in BIRD:azure:close to dexter:1?

Herveus: the owl's posture was not specified in the indexing, so it matched all postures ...corrected

This is also in the same category:

  1. Anthony fitz Robert
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in September of 1991 (via the West):
Per fess Or and vert, on a pale counterchanged, between in chief two martlets, in base a martlet vert.

This should be listed in BIRD:3 or more

Nope. There is a secondary group of 2 and a tertiary group of 1. There is no group of 3.

These are in annulet - 1 - argent, but have no annulets:

Eric of Eisental The following device associated with this name was registered in August of 1999 (via the East): Sable, a fir tree within roundels conjoined in annulo argent.

The roundels conjoined in annulo have the appearance of an annulet invected, which is how it is indexed.

I have noticed that the phrase "statant erect affronty" has been catalogued in four different ways. Personally I think some consistency would be a good thing here. There are 26 registered items that used the phrase: 11 are older and thus have no description of the creature and 15 have descriptions that vary from: affronte, passant, rampant & statant. Estrill

Herveus: in the Ordinary, only cats and dogs get grouped by posture at all. Frogs and turtles don't get posture applied at all.

Presently, postures break down into several disjoint sets:

rampant/addorsed/combattant/rampant to dexter/rampant to sinister

passant/statant/passant to dexter/passant to sinister/statant to dexter/statant to sinister

tergiant

affronte

couchant/dormant/couchant to dexter/couchant to sinister/dormant to dexter/dormant to sinister

sejant/sejant to dexter/sejant to sinister

For cats and dogs, using affronte would require adding another division in the ordinary, so I'd be inclined to use rampant, as that would be the most applicable alternative. ...or else I take affronte to be a species of rampant. I'd expect there to be a CD between statant erect affronty and rampant, but given the rarity of affronty, I think we can don't cause search problems by conflating them.

For everything else, affronte should be applied as the posture.

I've fixed what needed fixing.

The following are in BEAST-BEAR:argent:1 and should be in MONSTER-SEA BEAR

Richard the Gude

    * The following device associated with this name was registered in December of 1983 (via Caid):
Vert, a sea-bear erect and on a base engrailed argent a skull gules.
Leifr Beorn Hrolfsson
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in August of 1998 (via the East):
Barry wavy azure and Or, a sea bear erect argent.

they are in MONSTER-SEA, OTHER. There is not "MONSTER-SEA BEAR" category. They are also listed under BEAST-BEAR for completeness

  1. Myfanwy Glanmorfa
    * The following device associated with this name was registered in January of 2005 (via An Tir):
Per fess azure and vert, a fess wavy cotised wavy argent.

This was in FESS:plain line:uncharged:1, but this fess doesn't have a plain line.

This is indexed as Fess wavy and Fess cotised which puts it in both places; it's an artifact of the way I index cotised ordinaries.

What's the deal with the quotation marks here?

  1. Astrum Aureum, House
    * This household name was registered to "Jonathon von Trotha" and "Deille of Farnham" in January of 2004 (via Atenveldt).

Herveus: Perhaps the display code should parse it out or drop the quotations, but it's the normal way to keep a list straight in this situation in this database.

The January 1980 LOAR states: "Trude Lacklandia, (change of blazon). Sable, a domestic cat couchant guardant chased argent.

Note: chased means voided but with the interior details and lines still showing as well as the outline."

Currently the device is indexed under CAT:couchant:argent:1 ; the description makes me wonder whether it would more appropriately appear under CAT:couchant:sable:1 . It sounds like the cat is sable, fimbriated and detailed argent.

The scan of the file shows a cat clearly labeled as "argent" on a field labeled "sable". I don't know what "chased" is really supposed to mean here.

Genevieve de Belleval The following device associated with this name was registered in February of 1998 (via the Middle): Azure, a quill pen argent, in chief three estoilles Or. ? blazon typo for "estoile"

I've seen "estoille" spelled with one and two <l>'s.

JML: not a typo I'm interested in correcting at this time; it's been registered 13 times - plus once in an order name.
